Shopping Tips for Medicare
Shopping for a Medicare plan is not very different than your experience choosing a medical plan through an employer. The best option is determined by matching a plan that meets the unique needs and wants of the individual.
Medicare Advantage with Drug Coverage
- Type of plan (HMO, PPO?)
- Amount of premium, if any
- All medical providers are in network
- All drugs are covered under the plan and total annual drug costs
- Desired pharmacy is a preferred pharmacy in the plan network
- Amount of medical deductible, if any
- Amount of drug deductible and drug tiers exempted from deductible
- Availability of other services such as chiropractic and acupuncture
- Amount of maximum out of pocket (MOOP)
- Additional services included and level of coverage
(dental, vision, hearing, fitness, over-the-counter products ) - National network for in network coverage while traveling
- Option to receive cash back from plan (i.e. Part B Giveback)
NOTE: For a Medicare Advantage plan without drug coverage, you will still want to evaluate all the above elements specific to medical. Such plans are usually chosen by someone with drug coverage through another source (i.e. veteran with VA benefits.)
Medicare Supplement
- Plan type ideal for your needs (coverage for Part A, Part B, or both)
- Premium amount and record of cost increases over time
- Insurance rating from credit agency (i.e. A+, A, BBB, etc.)
- Additional services (i.e. fitness)
Part D Drug Coverage: Plan must be purchased separately for all Medicare Supplement plans.
Dental, Vision, Hearing Plans: Must be purchased separately for all Medicare Supplement plans.
Part D Prescription Drug Coverage
- Amount of premium
- All drugs are covered under the plan and total annual drug costs
- Desired pharmacy is a preferred pharmacy in the plan network
- Amount of drug deductible and drug tiers exempted from deductible
